Project Overview and Role:
The Data Informatics and Analytical Solutions (DIAS) Practice is seeking a Senior Associate to provide data analytics and visualization support across practices and international donor-funded health and development programs (including the such as the U.S. Agency for International Development and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention). United States Age for USAID, CDC, and other international donor-funded programs. This position is based in Washington, DC and entails approximately 30% overseas travel.
The DIAS Practice is a dynamic and innovative group with talented and passionate members working toward the goal of improving informed decision making and effectiveness of international development projects. Our vision is to improve development investments and outcomes by harnessing the power of digital solutions to strength information systems, governance, local capacity and ownership to use quality data in real time for positive impact. To do this, DIAS takes a systems approach that combines expertise across monitoring and evaluation and research; effective data use; information and communication technology (ICT); and data governance to help governments and development partners throughout the world to design, implement, and evaluate projects that create positive impact.
The Senior Associate will help lead the design and development of high-quality compelling data analyses and data visualization products to drive programmatic decision making, learning and adaptation. They will collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to understand user needs, data use cases and develop clear and compelling data products that transform data into interactive and dynamic visualizations to convey analytical insights, demonstrate results, and communicate analytical findings.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
Assist in identifying priority information needs, gathering stakeholder requirements, and mapping data for data analysis and visualization products.This may include supporting and guiding project teams on appropriate data infrastructure, schemas, tools, and processes.
Use SQL queries (or other programming languages) to explore, understand, and make use of diverse sets of data and relational data sources, including data quality and verification checks.It is anticipated that the position will work with a variety of data sources (such as client-line data, aggregated programmatic or project data, survey data, financial data, etc.) and may need to transform, integrate, clean, and structure data for use in data visualization products.
Create prototypes and mock-ups of data products and visualizations (including dashboards) based on stakeholder requirements
Design, develop, and iterate on static and interactive data visualizations, dashboards, and maps using visual analytics and business intelligence tools (preference towards using open-source data visualization tools).Visualization products should be developed following data visualization best practices and principles.
Develop and deliver end-user training materials and technical documentation for business intelligence and visualization deliverables
Support the integration of data visualization tools and products into routine data review and program monitoring processes, working with stakeholders to develop and interpret data insights
Translate complex data analysis concepts and visuals into clear and useable messages for different audiences
Asses with other tasks as assigned
Required Qualifications:
Advanced skills in using data visualization platforms such as advanced Excel visualizations, Tableau, PowerBI, R and Python packages, Metabase, or Google Data Studio, and other business intelligence tools. Preference for open-source data visualization platforms.
Proven relevant work experience in designing and developing effective data visualizations (preferably for global health programs).
Interest or expertise in UI/UX design principles and graphic design is desirable
Experience facilitating data visualization projects (conceptualization, stakeholder engagement, design and execution, iteration, and on-going support)
Demonstrated track record increasing use of data and promoting data literacy through effective data visualization products
Knowledge of USAID Global Health and/or PEPFAR/HIV programs and indicators is strongly preferred
Geospatial analysis skills using ArcGIS or QGIS, desirable
Knowledge of health information systems, e.g., electronic medical records, DHIS2, community health information systems, labs, pharmacy, commodities, etc. desirable
Other Skills Required
Proficiency with common data management tools (such as SQL, Stata, SAS, R, Python etc.) for data management, cleaning, and processing for data visualizations is an added plus.Preference for open-source data programming languages.
Strong cross-cultural, interpersonal, management and collaboration skills in highly complex structures involving multiple teams and stakeholders.
Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail
Highly self-motivated and able to work independently as well as in team settings.
Well-honed active listening skills, combined with a desire to actively coach, mentor, and provide thoughtful feedback to colleagues, peers, and subordinates.
Prior experience of working in a fast-paced, solution-focused and dynamic workplace; expert skills in multi-tasking.
Proven capacity to take initiative and willingness to learn new skills as needed
Strong communication, analytic, and presentation skills
Ability to work cross-culturally with flexibility to work across time zones, occasionally accommodating meeting times outside of the regular workday.
Full proficiency in spoken and written English, language proficiency in French, Spanish or Portuguese desirable;
Ability to travel up to 30% internationally.
