Position Overview:

PIH is seeking a local Liberian medical doctor, preferably trained in paediatrics, family medicine, or GP with several years experience in paediatrics to be based at JJ Dossen Hospital in Maryland County, Liberia, with potential involvement at other locations as programs expand in other decentralized sites. This individual will work in close collaboration with the PIH and Liberian Ministry of Health and Social Welfare (MOHSW) clinical teams on improving the level of clinical care in child health at JJ Dossen Hospital. He or she will work hand in hand with the existing clinical team at the hospital thereby contributing into strengthening the clinical skills of the care providers (physician assistants and nurses) in line with the plan of the ministry of health to strengthen the health system in Liberia. While a component of this individual’s job will be focused on programmatic initiatives, his or her primary responsibility will be an active and respectful provision of inpatient care and outpatient consultation in paediatrics.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Provide direct clinical care and share medical knowledge at JJ Dossen Hospital and other primary level facilities within Maryland county as needed
  • Provide clinical teaching (both didactic and bedside), mentorship, and capacity building for MOHSW clinicians (nurses, physician assistants, doctors, medical students, and residents) around paediatrics and maternal and child health
  • Participate in night and weekend call schedule at JJ Dossen Hospital
  • Work closely with the Clinical team, Hospital administration and Director of Clinical Services on the development of protocols and the implementation of programmatic initiatives designed to improve clinical care.
  • Develop close relationships with MOHSW hospital staff and relevant local and national leadership to promote health systems strengthening.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of clinical work plans.
  • Work closely with the MOHSW to improve and foster quality care for patients.
  • Identify and lead initiatives that will contribute in the measurement of key performance indicators for quality improvement and work with the Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) team to track improvements in clinical care.
  • Work with the Clinical Program leads and the M&E team to implement clinical Quality Improvement (QI) initiatives
  • Ensure the efficient, effective, and safe flow of patients on the inpatient and outpatient services while helping to implement best practices
  • Provide clinical care with a focus on social justice and the ethical provision of care.
  • Abide by Liberian MOHSW policies, procedures, and laws while conducting clinical care.


  • Doctor of Medicine degree (MD) with at least 2 years experience in working in paediatrics
  • Experience independently performing the following services: neonatal resuscitation and stabilization of premature neonates, emergency c-section, vacuum-delivery, forceps delivery
  • Current or recent clinical practice and a current, valid clinical license to practice medicine.
  • Clinical experience in local Liberian facilities and in resource-limited settings.
  • Experience in clinical teaching, mentorship, and preceptor role in maternal and child health programs (previous experience in the management of clinical teams).
  • Exemplary interpersonal skills to interact effectively with senior leadership, partners, government officials, patients, and other clinicians on sensitive issues.
  • Proven commitment to social justice and human rights and serving with dignity and respect for beneficiaries and colleagues.
  • Ability to be flexible and effective in the face of unexpected challenges.
  • Adaptability to work in a team-oriented, collaborative environment.
  • Excellent communication skills (both verbal and written).
  • Strong organization skills.
  • Ability to implement programmatic initiatives with sensitivity will all due respect to principles established by Liberian law. to different cultural norms.
  • Strong commitment to health equity and social justice.
  • Ability to live and work in Harper, Maryland County Full-time
  • Fluency in English.
