STAR PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

Sustaining Technical and Analytic Resources (STAR) is a project of the Public Health Institute (PHI) in partnership with the Johns Hopkins University (JHU) and the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), supported by the US Agency for International Development (USAID). STAR is a Global Health talent hub. Through fellowships, internships, and strategic partnerships, STAR supports building the capacity of diverse global health professionals and organizations at all levels to make inclusive, collaborative, and innovative contributions to global health. STAR participants collaborate in the development of systems and tools that strengthen and sustain the local and global health response.

INTERNSHIP DESCRIPTION

Background:

The Office of HIV/AIDS (OHA) is the focus of HIV/AIDS technical leadership for USAID and has primary responsibility for leading the Agency’s efforts within President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), a $52 billion multifaceted approach to combating the disease in more than 120 countries around the world since 2003. Under the leadership of the US Department of State’s Office of the US Global AIDS Coordinator (OGAC) and in cooperation with other US Government (USG) partners, international organizations, and nongovernmental organizations, USAID provides global technical leadership on the full range of issues related to HIV/AIDS prevention, care, and treatment; manages numerous research and field support programs; and monitors the impact of the Agency’s HIV/AIDS programs. In this endeavor, USAID works very closely with a range of USG agencies involved in the fight against AIDS, such as the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Department of Defense, and Peace Corps. Introduction:

The Gender and Sexual Diversity (GSD) Branch Intern (Intern) will be assigned to the Priority Populations, Integration, and Rights Division of OHA within the Bureau for Global Health. The intern will support the work of the Branch, which includes addressing issues of gender equality, preventing and responding to gender-based violence, and finding and engaging men in HIV services. The Intern will primarily engage in activities in OHA and may also carry out other GH Bureau-wide duties and collaborative research with other Bureau analysts. They will collaborate on relevant activities with the OHA Gender/Gender Based Violence (GBV) Technical Cluster, Finding/Engaging Men Technical Cluster and GH Bureau Gender Advisors group, and collaborate with members of different OHA technical teams as appropriate.

Reporting structure:

The Intern will work closely with the PPIR Division and receive technical guidance from the PPIR Division Chief, who will serve as their Point of Contact. They will receive day-to-day guidance from the GSD Branch Senior Gender Advisor.

OUTCOMES

By the end of the internship, the Intern will have gained experience and exposure to:

Greater understanding about PEPFAR and international HIV/AIDS and gender work.

In-depth experience in the field of gender and HIV.

Quantitative and qualitative data analysis skills and using analyses to inform gender and HIV programming.

Collaboration and coordination within a complex organizational and implementation structure.

Essential Duties:

Support organization and execution of OHA-organized gender/GBV and Finding/Engaging Men knowledge sharing webinars between USAID operating units, PEPFAR implementing partners, and the PEPFAR interagency.

Assist with cross-Branch and cross-office PEPFAR technical priorities as they relate to gender/GBV and finding/engaging men, which may include: application of technical best practices to improve country programs; routine program data analysis; supporting the team in preparation and delivery of technical webinars and presentations for both country and headquarters staff.

Support the analysis of PEPFAR and non-PEPFAR gender- and GBV-related data from priority countries.

Support the GSD Branch including agenda setting, note taking, follow up on identified action items, and contribute to Branch deliverables as requested.

Other tasks or responsibilities fitting Intern’s interests/goals.

Anticipated learning outcomes:

All STAR Interns will participate in learning activities (*required 10% time) during their internship. By the end of the internship, the Intern will be able to:

Gain exposure to quantitative and qualitative data analysis and international HIV/AIDS and gender work through global health programming.

INTERNSHIP REQUIREMENTS

Required:

Currently enrolled masters or other post-bachelor’s degree candidate or completion of such within the past 12 months, including nursing, physician assistant, or medical degree candidates.

Knowledge of public health practices, infectious diseases, disease control and epidemiologic methods.

Demonstrated background and/or interest in gender and health is desired.

Professional or academic experience implementing global health programming.

Ability to analyze data from different sources/databases utilizing multiple data analytic platforms (such as Excel).

Ability to create and present data visuals.

Strong interpersonal, facilitation and team building skills, and ability to work cross-culturally with diverse teams.

Demonstrated innovative thinking and problem-solving skills.

Excellent analytical, written, and oral communication skills.

This position may require travel. Ability to participate in a field experience, which may involve domestic and/or international travel and overnight stays for up to 2 weeks pending lifting of COVID-19 restrictions.

US citizenship or US permanent residency required.

Additional skills (preferred):

Experience working with Tableau is desired.
