Jhpiego’s Technical Leadership and Innovation (TLI) office drives impact across Jhpiego’s core areas of work in women’s health (maternal and newborn health, reproductive health and family planning, and women’s cancers), infectious disease (HIV/AIDS, Malaria, COVID response/global health security) and health systems strengthening (primary health care, immunization, safe surgery). This dynamic team of technical leaders provides “best in class” technical leadership and support responsive to country needs and in pursuit of accelerated impact.
Jhpiego’s newly formed Innovation Hub, which sits within TLI, brings together a multi-disciplinary team of change agents focused on frontier technology, service delivery innovations, cutting-edge approaches to human resource capacity building, human centered design, and market-driven solutions. The team works together both with technical leaders within TLI and country and project leaders across the organization to deeply analyze global health challenges and identify disruptive solutions including new business models, market-driven approaches, novel service delivery models and transformative innovations.
Jhpiego is seeking an exceptionally dynamic and effective leader to harness a diverse set of cross-cutting approaches and tools to accelerate transformative programmatic and technology innovations across the organization’s portfolio of programs in 35 countries. We are looking for a strategic thinker and exceptional collaborator who can lead and grow a high-performing team and effectively engage a range of teams across Jhpiego and its partners.
The Director will work to enhance and strengthen Jhpiego’s collaboration with innovation partners in the academic, public, private, and research sectors at global and regional levels. And the Director will continue to embed a culture of innovation across the organization and incorporate innovative practices into current programs. The Director, Innovations will provide leadership, strategic direction and technical guidance to Jhpiego’s innovation and market-driven activities and will oversee, guide and set the priorities of the Innovations team in the following key areas:
Frontier Solutions: Foster strategic engagement in the field of emerging technologies, data science and advanced analytics and establish new networks and collaborations to position Jhpiego as a key player in this sector.
Market Solutions: Working closely with key technical teams, formulate high impact programs, new service delivery models in mixed health systems environment, and market shaping opportunities for sustainable introduction and scale up of new products and services in LMICs.
Capacity Building: Provide strategic guidance and support in developing advanced capacity building solutions and services to ensure service continuity during and beyond the pandemic.
Position can be based in Washington, DC or Baltimore, with flexibility for alternative locations in any of Jhpiego’s country offices.
Provide leadership, strategic guidance, networks and support across the organization, in close collaboration with the Vice President, TLI and TLI’s technical leads, to support the integration of innovation and market-based solutions across Jhpiego’s technical priorities
S trengthen and embed a culture of innovation across the organization and help incorporate innovative practices into current programs and technical areas
Provide leadership, strategic direction, and day-to-day management to ensure the technical, programmatic and financial integrity of the Innovation Hub and to achieve rapid realization of goals, objectives and targets
Prioritize and recommend areas for organizational investments in innovations using a problem-centered approach, where a deep understanding of entrenched problems and country-specific root causes serves as the basis for decision making
Collaborate closely with technical and country leads to continually shape and evaluate innovation investments and priorities
Lead and oversee the management of a high-performing Innovation Hub team, including managing and ensuring efficient use of technical and financial resources; working with the team to set program direction and goals, define targets and measure program performance; leading technical managers in driving a culture of accountability and data-driven learning: regularly assessing progress against objectives, identifying risks, and driving creative problem solving to resolve issues
Support efforts to build capacity to leverage innovation and market solutions across the organization
Mentor team members and enhance adherence to guiding principles and philosophy of the Innovation Hub, which include commitment to achieving impact through affordability, accessibility, and scalability of evidence-based innovations in limited resource settings
Oversee administrative activities related to the team, including closely liaising with TLI leadership and management team to manage overall program budget, logistics, and Human Resources
Lead efforts, in collaboration with Jhpiego’s New Partnership Development team, for new business development, including developing and maintaining strong professional relationships with external stakeholders to maximize Jhpiego’s impact
Analyze and develop new business opportunities, lead positioning activities, engage and develop new partnerships, and participate in proposal design
Grow strong networks and partnerships for the organization, identifying opportunities and developing high impact public private partnerships that leverage the combined skills, assets, technologies, and resources of the public, private, and nonprofit sectors
Represent Jhpiego externally, including at priority conferences, meetings and on working groups at global and regional levels
Advanced degree in public health, business or related field
10+ years’ progressively responsible experience in leadership roles in innovation and/or market-based solutions

Strong health, medical technology, and/or digital health expertise applied to work in low resource settings, particularly in technical and health system areas consistent with Jhpiego’s mission
Demonstrated understanding of the landscape of frontier solutions, data analytics, emerging technologies, social enterprises, development finance in LMIC context
Strategic thinker with exemplary record of developing and operationalizing vision and strategy
Excellent problem-solving skills and demonstrated experience utilizing innovation and/or market-based solutions to effectuate disruptive change in health care systems of low and middle-income countries (LMIC)
Proven leadership and management skills and proven record of managing diverse skill sets, working effectively with and leading diverse teams of professionals
Excellent inter-personal and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively in a multi-cultural environment and in challenging developing country settings
Proven collaborator with ability to see and create connections across vertical health areas, as well as across c ross-cutting areas (e.g. digital health, capacity building, policy and advocacy, gender, market solutions, etc.)
Proven ability to work in a complex, fast-paced, multi-cultural environment with multiple tasks and short deadlines
Entrepreneurial and results-oriented mindset, comfortable with uncertainty, willing to take calculated risks , and proven ability to deliver results
Exceptional communication skills with ability to diplomatically and clearly communicate complex ideas with well-developed structure and logic
Ability to lead as a team player, mentor and manager, demanding top performance from self and in partnership with the entire team
Demonstrated success working with key stakeholders in both the public and private sectors, particularly in resource-constrained countries
Understanding of country contexts obtained by either having worked in a low-resource country or significant experience and in the field supporting implementation and/or research in national LMIC health systems
Background/experience in corporate innovation and achieving disruptive organizational change
Demonstrated experience using human-centered design, design thinking or other common approaches to strengthening a culture of innovation
Experience working in the technology sector or with key stakeholders in the technology sector
Experience with implementation research
Ability to travel up to 30% nationally and internationally
French, Spanish or Portuguese language skills preferred
