Mental Health-HIV Integration Program

Once at the epicenter of the HIV/AIDS epidemic, Zimbabwe has made much progress towards controlling its epidemic over the past few years. However, despite these gains, almost a quarter of patients initiated on treatment drop out of care by their 5th year and viral suppression among all people living with HIV (PLHIV) remains low. Evidence shows that treating common mental disorders (CMDs) improves HIV outcomes across the continuum of care, but there remains a dearth of effective integrated mental health services in HIV treatment programs, in part due to a lack of mental health professionals in sub-Saharan Africa.

To address this, CHAI is initiating its MH-HIV integration program as part of a broader HIV grant by working with the MOHCC’s Mental Health and HIV Departments, as well as local and international clinicians, to:

Evaluate the national health systems’ capacity to integrate care for CMDs into HIV programs and assess the operational feasibility of existing models of integrated care at select facilities to determine an optimized approach for national implementation.

Demonstrate the feasibility of national roll out of an optimized model of integrated care to improve HIV clinical outcomes by addressing the mental health needs of PLHIV affected by CMDs.
